In this course, you will gain an understanding and appreciation for design as a discipline and refine your aesthetic eye. You will learn the building blocks of design including the distinction between elements and principles and determine their application in a variety of environments and visual presentations. You will not only learn how to articulate your ideas using design language and terminology, but will also gain an understanding of the art of visual communication using industry standard Adobe Photoshop software. You will explore the senses and how they can be utilized to influence human interaction and experiences. Join this course and master how to leverage the power you have to influence others by flexing your creativity and problem solving skills to produce designs that make a difference!

Or, perhaps you have noticed people treating you differently based on how you dress? In this class, you will learn the impact on how dress plays a role in judging others and ourselves. A cross-cultural study of race, ethnicity, gender diversity, and meaning of appearance/dress as manifestations of both individual and group behavior, social organizations, and cultural norms.

The course foregrounds language and power and examines identity and identity intersections across race, ethnicity, and gender. Students will be asked to ponder and explore multiple forms of privilege and oppression in relation to themselves and others. During course times, there is also a bi-weekly experiential learning component that will take place in the Columbus community off campus.

This survey course provides an overview of contemporary young adult literature and invites students to actively engage in the literary arts through reading, analyzing, discussing, and writing about young adult literature and its relationship to cultural constructions of adolescence. We will explore and reflect on how literary works of art shape our world views, identities, and humanity.

This course is designed to develop your critical language awareness with respect to language diversity and to prepare you to engage effectively with linguistically diverse populations in educational contexts. We explore language diversity, how it shapes teaching and learning, and how we can reshape linguistic environments to make them more equitable.

The course approaches the meaning of citizenship through the lens of equity, diversity, and justice. Foregrounding teachers™ transformative roles in schools, it addresses how discussions of inclusion, community-building, problem-solving, dialogue, advocacy, etc. are integral part of justice-oriented citizenship. It explores debates on school inequities and the role of educators in creating inclusive curriculum and social belongings for all students, and especially on the need to affirm students™ identities and experiences. In this course, students will examine how schools are sociopolitical spaces where hierarchies and socially unjust practices are often reinforced through narratives of citizenship and reflected in biased practices in areas of school curriculum, policy, pedagogy, daily interactions, discipline, and punishment. The course addresses the urgency to meet the needs of increasingly diverse student populations and communities.
