Endorsements and Graduate Studies

This endorsement may be completed as Undergraduate or Graduate Non-Degree status; enrollment in a master's program is not a requirement. No more than ten (10) hours of graduate credit accumulated while in the graduate non-degree classification may be counted toward a graduate degree.

Program Requirements

  • Coursework can be completed at the undergraduate or graduate-level and during or after initial licensure coursework.
  • Content courses may be completed at another institution, but must be completed before taking the Methods courses
  • Methods courses must be completed at OSU
  • GPA requirement: 2.75 cumulative GPA or above in all content coursework.
  • All required courses must be taken within 6 years of applying to the Ohio Department of Education (ODE).
  • Content courses may exceed 6 year limit.

All Content Areas Requirement

Field experience (0-1 credit) (please see the attached Endorsement Field Requirement Addendum)

  • Option 1: Signed form from direct supervisor
  • Option 2: EDUTL 5189.22: Middle Childhood Generalist Endorsement Field Experience (1 credit). To register for this course, please complete the registration survey by:
    • April 1 for autumn course enrollment
    • September 1 for spring course enrollment

Regional students should consult with their academic advising office concerning the registration process.

Mathematics Required Courses

Content courses: Choose one Sequence:

  • MATH 1165 (108/109): Math for Middle Childhood Teachers I & MATH 1166 (109/110): Math for Middle Childhood Teachers II (5)

OR

  • MATH 1135: Number and Operations for Teachers (regional campuses only) & MATH 1136: Measurement and Geometry for Teachers (regional campuses only) (5)

Methods Course:

  • EDUTL 5270 (709) -OR- 7701 (812) (3)

Reading & Language Arts Required Courses

Content Course:

  • Choose one Literature course from approved US or World Literature courses OR EDUTL 3356 (if EDUTL 3356 was taken as a part of your initial license, you may not use it for the Endorsement) (0-1)

Content Course:

  • Choose at least one course from approved Composition, Oral Communication or Media Studies courses (two are strongly recommended): (5)

Methods Course:

  • EDUTL 5230 (706) -OR- 7316 (816) (3)

Science Required Courses

Content Course:

  • PHYSICS 1106 (106/107) OR 1107 (107/108): Physics by Inquiry I or II (5)

Content Course:

  • Choose one course from approved Life Science, Chemistry, and Earth Science options (3-5)

Methods Course:

  • EDUTL 5275 (719 or 731) or 7702 (811) (3)

Social Studies Required Courses

Content Course:

  • Choose two courses from approved Social Science courses. Courses must be from different areas (i.e. HIST and POLISCI) One of the two courses must be Ohio History (HISTORY 3030). (3+3)

Methods Course:

  • EDUTL 5280 (738) (3)

Upon successful completion of all required coursework and the appropriate OAE subtests:

  • Option 1: OAE Elementary Education, Subtests I AND II: Test Codes 018 and 019
  • Option 2: The content test(s) for each content area being added to the MC License:
    • OAE Middle School English Language Arts: Test Code 028
    • OAE Middle School Science: Test Code 029
    • OAE Middle School Mathematics: Test Code 030
    • OAE Middle School Social Studies: Test Code 031

Candidates are required to submit the ODE Licensure Application and payment online through the ODE website

*As of July 1, 2019, The Ohio Department of Education requires all students seeking license or endorsement to complete the new version on the Opioid Module. To verify completion, students must document their certificate by sending it to tl-academicservices@osu.edu, prior to applying for license or endorsement.
