Professional and Career Development

Participating in professional and career development opportunities is important to enhance and maintain your knowledge and skills as well as to help you grow professionally and advance your career.

Ohio State has many resources that you may use to start developing your plan. Following are resources will help get you started.

Michael V. Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning
Hosts workshops, seminars, events and trainings on a variety of topics throughout the semester to enhance your teaching skills.

The Research Commons
Hosts events, workshops, presentations and seminars are offered throughout the year on topics including planning research, grant writing, IRB submissions and publishing.

LinkedIn Learning
Ohio State faculty, staff and students have free access to LinkedIn Learning. You get 24/7 unlimited access to learn at your own pace in courses that are relevant to your career goals and interests. 

Graduate School
The Graduate School provides career building strategies and skill development resources, including workshops and other trainings for graduate students to enhance their experience. 

EHE Graduate Student Travel Award Program
Graduate students enrolled in a graduate program within the College of Education and Human Ecology may request funding from faculty for support, up to $350 from their department of enrollment, and apply for up to $250 for a matching award through the Office of Research, Innovation and Collaboration (ORIC) for presenting their original research at national and international professional meetings.

OUAB’s Professional Growth Programs
Offer activities, such as etiquette dinners, writing teaching and research statement workshops and individual development plan workshops.

Council of Graduate Students (CGS)
Provides graduate students funding and programming opportunities to enhance personal and professional development.

Alumnifire 
An online professional networking and mentoring program that connects Ohio State students and alumni from their program in a variety of related career fields.

Preparing Future Faculty Program
Connects graduate students who are one or two years away from graduating with faculty mentors at partner institutions to learn more about being a faculty member at a liberal arts or small institution.

Versatile PhD
Offers an online support community of PhDs for those exploring non-academic career opportunities. Get access to examples of successful resumes and cover letters. Participation can be completely confidential.
