Financial Planning Programs

Pursue an in-demand, yet rewarding, career in financial planning where you help others reach their financial goals. As a Financial Planning minor or Consumer and Family Financial Services major, you’ll be prepared to take the Certified Financial Planner® certification exam upon graduation. You’ll also make valuable connections and gain experiences that will help you stand out to employers upon graduation.

  • Excellent, hands-on CFP® coursework that makes the Ohio State Financial Planning program a top producer of CFP® certificants, per CFP® Board exam statistics

  • You can sit for major industry licensure, the FINRA Securities Industry Essentials Exam (CSCFFS 5150) and the Series 65 Exam (CSCFFS 5160)

Financial Planning program news

Autumn 2026

  • In August, the CFP® Program is at the Ohio State Student Involvement Fair. Izzy Peacock was named as one of 15 recipients of its 2025 Registered Investment Advisor Talent Advantage (RIATA) Student Scholarship, provided by Schwab Advisor Services, in partnership with Charles Schwab Foundation.
  • In September, the “Finance x Financial Planning Career Fair” hosts 450 students and 40 employers. Our Student Financial Planning Association hosts Braden Riehl, Danny Lattner, and Grant Van Winkle. New GE course “Women & Money” is approved for Spring 2026, and new “Financial Planning Software” is approved for Spring 2026.
  • In October, 6 student leaders from the Student Financial Planning Association attend the CFP® Board Connections Conference in Chicago. Our Student Financial Planning Association hosts John Schuman, Grace Flesher, Maddie Hobbs, Travis Upton and Matt Sangali in their weekly meetings.
  • In November, the Ohio State team competes in the national Financial Planning Challenge and places 3rd overall. The national Financial Planning Challenge is held at the Financial Planning Association conference in Las Vegas. Our Student Financial Planning Association hosts Joe Schmitz in their weekly meetings. The “financial planning microcredential” was approved for the three courses: CSCFFS 5150 FINRA SIE Exam Prep, CSCFFS 5160 Series 65 Exam Prep and CSCFFS 5170 Financial Planning software.
  • In December, our Industry Advisory Board meets. The over 100 students in our “Fundamentals of Financial Planning” and “Financial Planning Applications” classes present their case studies to panels of local financial planners.
