World Language K-12: German M.Ed. Prerequisite Coursework

Required for entry to the M.Ed. Program

Preference for admission to the M.Ed. In World Language will be given to students who have participated in a study aboard/immersion program, conducted research for credit, or other similar experiences.

Candidates are required to complete a minimum of 30 semester hours* of German coursework at a 3.0 or above GPA in addition to the 2 education prerequisites at the bottom. Students must also complete two ACTFL/LTI assessments, the OPI or OPTc and WPT or iWPT, and achieve at least an Advanced Low score for each to be eligible for admission to the M.Ed. program.

  • ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI or OPIc)(Advanced-Low)
  • ACTFL Writing Proficiency Test (WPT or iWPT)(Advanced-Low)

The Department of Teaching & Learning will waive and count the above courses (12 credits) toward the 30 credits of required language coursework for those who are rated Advanced High or higher on the OPI/OPIc and WPT/iWPT. Any exceptions MUST be approved through the Department of Teaching & Learning’s Graduate Student Services (GSS).

  • German 1101 (101/102), German I
  • German 1102 (102/103), German II
  • German 1103 (103/104), German III
  • Language Study (minimum of 2 courses)
  • Culture (minimum of 1 course)
  • Literature (minimum of 1 course)

Students who do not complete these prior to the beginning of the M.Ed. will not be able to take them until after the program is finished. This will affect when the university is able to recommend a student for licensure to the state.
