Suicide Prevention with Substance Using Youth Experiencing Homelessness
PI: Natasha Slesnick
Amount: $3,748,259
Sponsor: National Institutes of Health
Department: Human Sciences
The literature is characterized by a dearth of information on how to reduce risk for suicide among marginalized substance using youth experiencing homelessness (YEH). Suicide is the leading cause of death among YEH and most youth do not access services that may be available to them. Therefore, this study seeks to address this gap in the research literature with the goal to identify an effective intervention that can be readily adopted by communities that serve these youth.
Head Start Children's Concurrent and Sequential Enrollment in Public Early Childhood Education Programs
PI: Ji-Young Choi
Amount: $18,525

The project will highlight patterns of public ECE use that best relate to positive school readiness and identify groups of families who have limited access to public ECE services. Researchers, integrated data system (IDS) experts, and community partners will work together for this project.

Promoting Caregiver Implementation of an Effective Early Learning Intervention (STAR4)
PI: Laura Justice
Amount: $3,100,594
Sponsor: National Institutes of Health
Department: Crane Center for Early Childhood Research and Policy (CCEC)
The proposed 5-year study uses a causally interpretable research design to examine the effects of the Sit Together and Read (STAR) early-literacy intervention on the short- and long-term literacy skills of young children with developmental language disorder. It also examines the use of caregiver-directed behavior- change strategies as a means to support caregivers' implementation of the intended treatment strength. STAR is a fully manualized intervention that significantly improves the early-literacy skills and longer-term reading outcomes of children at-risk for future reading difficulty. The proposed study is instrumental in assessing longitudinal impacts for children with developmental language disorder and identifying ways to enhance caregiver implementation of the key intervention ingredients.

Human Sciences, Food for Thought: Pilot Study of a MIND Diet Intervention in Triple Negative Breast Cancer Survivors
PI: Tonya Orchard
Amount: $247,500
Sponsor: American Institute for Cancer Research
Department: Human Sciences
This study will test a 12-week remotely delivered dietary counseling intervention based on the MIND diet pattern to determine effects on cancer related cognitive impairment (CRCI), commonly called "chemobrain", in women with triple negative breast cancer starting systemic treatments. CRCI is an important issue because it affects up to three fourths of breast cancer survivors during chemotherapy and causes difficulty with memory and other cognitive functions. Our hypothesis is that a dietary intervention focused on the MIND diet will reduce cognitive problems in cancer survivors. This will pave the way for future research to develop dietary approaches to minimize side effects of cancer treatment and improve quality of life.

Generating Positive Workplace Outcomes Through Well-Being: Examining Collegiate Recreation Employees
PI: Leeann Lower-Hoppe
Amount: $9,518
Sponsor: National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association
Department: Human Sciences
The literature proposes a happy worker is a productive worker, with employee well-being linked to job performance (Nielson et al., 2017). However, this thesis offers organizations little guidance as it does not establish the antecedents to well-being. Our project investigates the antecedents of employee well-being and their influence on job performance within the context of collegiate recreation. The results of our project will inform human resource strategies and employee training interventions to improve employee well-being and performance.

Racial Disparities in Older Adults' Economic Security when Experiencing Chronic Health Conditions: Insights from Electronic Health Records, Wage Earnings, and Credit Data
PI: Caezilia Loibl
Amount: $186,523
Sponsor: University of Wisconsin Center for Financial Security (Social Security Administration)
Department: Human Sciences
Economic insecurity in older age can reduce the ability to cope with a costly disease and exacerbate racial health disparities. This study asks: How do different sources of financial resources associate with the control of type-2 diabetes, a common chronic condition in older age? We construct a new panel dataset that links electronic health records to employment and credit data for a sample of older adults in Ohio from 2018-2022. We identify how wage earnings, access to credit, and debt are related to diabetes control and disability-related complications. We expect the association between financial resources and diabetes control to be stronger for economically vulnerable groups who are more dependent on Social Security retirement benefits.
